Gilded prints

Susan Burnstine portrays her dream-like visions entirely in-camera, rather than with post-processing manipulations. To achieve her visions, she has created twenty-one hand-made film cameras and lenses. These unique tools are frequently unpredictable and technically challenging. The cameras are primarily made out of plastic, vintage camera parts and random household objects. They are equipped with single element lenses molded out of plastic and rubber. To overcome their extensive limitations Susan relies on instinct and intuition… the same tools that are key when trusting in the unseen. Susan’s new work includes prints on vellum that are backed with gold or silver leaf that yield unique prints.
